On 30th August 2008 we were honored and invited to 3 days of sweat lodge ceremonies conducted by Charlie Thom Sr. (Red Hawk) at his home. He is a respected Karuk spiritual leader, medicine man and a former director of an Earth Circle Association, a non-profit educational organization. The Earth Circle Association is a spiritual organization committed to the path of harmony with Nature/the Earth/the Creator and oneself.

A Special Journey With Charlie Thom Sr. as experienced by Marshall Jack (Golden Eagle):

“As one of the many Native American spiritual leaders I find myself looking for advice or information for my next level on my spiritual journey. Today there are very few true medicine man or woman.

During a recent calling to go to Mt.Shasta, I was elated to sit and talk with Charlie Thom Sr. I was very much uplifted by his spirit. Although he is in his eighties, he still has energy to heal and the ancient wisdom of the elders to share. I couldn’t hold back the tears of gratitude while in a conversation with Charlie so I excused myself for a few moments to thank the spirit world for leading me here.

One of my beautiful teachers, many years ago when I was in my late teens had express his wisdom about our teachers. He asked me to cherish my teachers and learn as much as I can from each teacher. He also mentioned that there will be one day as you look around you will realize that all of your teachers have gone on, to their place in the spirit world. When that day arrives, you hopefully will have enough information to make the right decisions for the healing of all things. If you should make mistakes there will not be any teachers around to help and guide you. So by then, you better know how to talk to the Creator on your own.

Charlie Thom Sr. has used his energy over the years to preserve and protect the areas around Mt.Shasta. I lend him my support and prayers. Charlie is one of the last of a generation who carries the “old wisdom”. Many blessings to Charlie and his family and friends.”

Charlie Thom Sr. guided us in the sacred sweat lodge purification ceremony, the traditional way of cleansing the body, mind and spirit which employs his unique, ancient prayers. At the end of the sweat lodge ceremony one can experience being re-born and rejuvenated.

The sweat lodge is designed and perceived as a mothers womb. A darkened heated environment dramatically fosters a deep inner reflection. Ancient belief systems are protocols which originated from the ancestors that has been passed down through the centuries with prayers, songs and teachings. The intense heat and steam from hot rocks which are in the middle of the sweat lodge induces a profound prayerful surrendered attitude. During the ceremony you have the opportunity to receive cedar blessings which serves to remove negative energies.

These ceremonies creates immediate bonding and a sense of community amongst the participants. The process has a profound beneficial effect for the greater community.

If one wants to receive full benefits it is important to regularly attend the sweat lodges at least once a week plus maintain a reverent attitude: positive thoughts, unconditional love and a continued focus on prayers and the Creator. If an individual chooses not to follow this Red-Road spiritual path than harmful feelings such as anger, hatred, irritation, jealousy, gossips, etc… will persist and thus weaken the person, the family and the community. By not committing to and embracing a powerful disciplined spiritual practice as outlined above than there will be a continuation of generalized malaise within the community. Negative mental/emotional states leads to various diseases. If you would like to awake your inner power it is absolutely necessary to cultivate one’s pure thoughts, as one’s inner strength depends on the strength of radiant feelings. In t his way one can create positive outcomes in every day life which are in alignment with the Universal law and for the highest good of all.

A typical prayer in a spiritual traditional sweat lodge might be:

Grandmother, Mysterious One,
We search for you along this
Great Red Road you have set us on.
Sky Father, Tunkashila,
We thank you for the world.
We thank you for our own existence.
We ask only for your blessing and for your instruction.
Grandfather, Sacred One,
Put our feet on the holy path that leads to you,
and give us the strength and the will
to lead ourselves and our children
past the darkness we have entered.
Teach us to heal ourselves,
to heal each other and to heal the world.
Let us begin this very day,
this very hour,
the Great Healing to come.
Let us walk the Red Road in Peace.
Ho! Mikakuye oyasin. Hecetu welo!!....All my relatives, it is indeed so…!
